Vice President Iliana Iotova attended this evening a ceremony marking the handover of the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), held in the resort town of Sveti Vlas.

During the ceremony, the Ambassador of Poland to Bulgaria, Maciej Szymański, symbolically handed over the EU Council presidency to the Ambassador of Denmark, Flemming Stender. As of July 1, Denmark will assume the presidency for the next six months.

Ambassador Szymański described the concluded Polish presidency as a challenging but successful period for Europe.

“The European Union is like a ship that changes its captain every six months. During the Polish presidency, our goal was to ensure better protection, stability, and direction for the European Union,” said Szymański.

He thanked the entire Polish team for their professionalism and dedication over the past six months and expressed confidence that Denmark would continue the chosen course with determination.

“As of July, the ship will continue its journey with a new captain, to whom I wish success. We will continue to seek common solutions to our shared challenges,” added the ambassador.

Earlier during the event, the ambassadors of Poland and Denmark laid flowers before the bas-reliefs of Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Adam Mickiewicz, and Hans Christian Andersen, located along the Alley of Nations in Sveti Vlas.
The alley was built by the “Bulgarian Memory – Dinevi Brothers” Foundation and symbolizes respect for historical memory and friendship between nations.

At the site, the Danish ambassador announced that the priorities and program for the upcoming Danish presidency of the Council of the European Union would be officially presented the next day in Copenhagen.

“I will have the pleasure of presenting the program here in Bulgaria in July, when Denmark officially assumes the presidency. We will follow in Poland’s footsteps and continue building upon the joint program developed by our presidency trio – Poland, Denmark, and Cyprus,” stated Stender.

After the ceremony marking the end of the Polish presidency, a festive concert began at the “Arena” amphitheater in the Dinevi Resort.
Special guest of the event was Vice President Iliana Iotova. The concert program featured the orchestra of the State Opera – Burgas, which performed selected pieces from Polish and international film music.

Hosts of the event in Sveti Vlas were the Polish Ambassador to Bulgaria and the Mayor of Sveti Vlas, Ivan Nikolov. He recalled that last summer, Ambassador Maciej Szymański unveiled a bas-relief of Polish poet and revolutionary Adam Mickiewicz on the Alley of Nations in Sveti Vlas.
